The aim of the series is to encourage awareness of the importance of the Rule of Law and, with the assistance of recognised experts and thought leaders, to stimulate debate around its operation both domestically and internationally.
The series will begin with a panel discussion on the Illegal Migration Bill, which is being considered at Committee Stage by the House of Lords at present.
The panel discussion will take place on Tuesday 20 June 2023 at 4pm-5:45pm in the Inn of Court, Royal Courts of Justice, Belfast.
Chaired by Bernard Brady KC, the discussion will involve the following panelists:
· Alyson Kilpatrick, Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission
· Peter Lavery, Law Centre NI
· Claire Hanna MP, MP for South Belfast (joining virtually)
· Ronan Lavery KC, Bar of Northern Ireland
· Helena Wilson BL, Bar of Northern Ireland
· Sinead Marmion, Solicitor, Phoenix Law
The panel will explore the implications of the Illegal Migration Bill for the UK’s existing international law obligations as well as issues concerning the relationship between law and morality and the role of legal professionals in raising Rule of Law concerns during the legislative process.
