European Lawyers’ Day 2018
Today (Thursday 25 October) marks European Lawyers’ Day 2018 and this year’s theme from the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) is “Why Lawyers matter: Defending the defenders of the Rule of Law”. As the CCBE highlights, by defending citizens’ rights, sometimes against the authorities, lawyers play a vital role in upholding the rule of law right across Europe. To do so, they must be independent from all types of influence: political, judicial, and governmental, to name but a few.
This year the Bar of Northern Ireland is celebrating the work that lawyers do in upholding the rule of law by launching a new resource aimed at promoting awareness of the work that our members do. In this jurisdiction, the Bar is a thriving profession of over 600 self-employed barristers working in independent practice with a unique specialism and expertise in legal advocacy. This new resource, titled “The Bar of Northern Ireland: Leaders in Legal Excellence”, highlights the role of barristers and the unique way in which they serve the public interest, by upholding the rule of law and serving the administration of justice in courtrooms across Northern Ireland and beyond.
