Gerry McAlinden QC appointed High Court Judge

The Bar Council took the opportunity at it’s most recent meeting to celebrate the new Judicial appointment of former Bar Chairman Gerry McAlinden.

Members of the Council gathered to offer their congratulations ahead of the official swearing in ceremony, which was held on Friday 15th June 2018 in open court in Nisi Prius, carried out by Lord Chief Justice Sir Declan Morgan.

Mr McAlinden QC was appointed by Her Majesty the Queen, as a High Court judge in Northern Ireland.

Gerry was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in September 1986 and in an illustrious career at the Bar, being appointed Queen’s Counsel in October 2011 specialising in complex medical negligence litigation in Northern Ireland and Health Care Public Inquiry work.

He served as a member of the Bar Council before then being elected Chairman between 2014 and 2016, leading the profession through a period of ongoing reform and complex challenges.

In addition, Gerry was appointed to the Coroners’ Panel of Senior Counsel, representing the Coroners in Inquests including Legacy Inquests into historic Troubles related controversial killings and Judicial Reviews arising out of Inquests and was a legal member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Northern Ireland from January 2015 until his appointment to the High Court.
